Using your business as a force for good
Our speaker will be David Cope from 600 Strategy who will be talking about using your business as a force for good.
“The business of business is business” said Milton Friedman in the 1970s, arguing that businesses should only focus on maximising financial return to shareholders. Fast forward almost fifty years and an influential group of 180 CEOs from the US made the case for stakeholder capitalism over shareholder capitalism.
Stakeholder capitalism means businesses consider their success in terms of how much they benefit their employees, the communities they operate in, and the environment, as well as financial returns to shareholders. These American leaders of industry didn’t suddenly find their consciences, but they recognised that business is part of society and so for business to thrive, society must thrive, and business has a role in ensuring society does thrive.
In this talk, David will talk more about what this means for you and your business and using business as a force for good. How might you demonstrate and improve the positive impact your business has on society? How can you find like-minded businesses to collaborate with? How will this help you gain new customers and demonstrate the value of your product or service over others?
About the speaker
David works with purposeful businesses to help them define their goals and organise themselves to achieve their mission. Sustainability is his speciality, advising organisations on how they can achieve profitable futures without costing the Earth.
After gaining an MA in Natural Sciences, an MSc in Environmental Management Systems and a PhD in Ecology, David’s career moved into analysis and public policy as a Senior Civil Servant at Defra and then into organisational change and strategy at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Oxford Brookes University. He established 600 strategy ltd in 2019 to use his experience to date to support clients in the charitable and public sectors, as well as with companies that want to benefit people and planet as well as profit.
David advises on sustainability with landowners such as Englefield Estate, Duchy of Lancaster and Duchy of Cornwall (where he is now retained on a part-time basis as Head of Sustainability). Other clients have included the Country Land and Business Association, the Natural History Museum and Grenadier Estates – covering organisational strategy, project management and sustainability.
There is no parking available at the Hotel. The nearest public car parks are in Dene Street and St. Martin’s Walk, with parking charges from 8:00am. We suggest parking is booked until 9:45am.
