Common legal myths and misunderstandings – separating fact from fiction
The Mole Valley Chamber of Commerce is delighted to welcome two of its own members, Demelza Patricio of TWM Solicitors and Michelle Truelove of Surrey Hills Solicitors, as guest speakers at our upcoming event. Between them, they’ve seen and heard just about every legal myth under the sun – and they’re here to set the record straight.
We all know the law can feel a little intimidating, wrapped in centuries of tradition and jargon, but what really trips people up are the myths that circulate around it. This session will shine a light on some of the most common misunderstandings, giving you clarity, confidence and maybe even a sigh of relief.
Some of the myths under the microscope:
- “Common law marriage” – Couples living together often believe they have the same rights as married partners. Spoiler alert: they don’t.
- Separating couples – Think courts always favour mums? Or that bad behaviour will automatically affect the financial outcome? Demelza and Michelle will explain what really happens.
- Prenups – Are they not worth the paper they’re written on, or do they offer total protection? The truth is more nuanced (and far more useful).
- Wills – Many assume an old Will made before marriage remains valid, or that partners automatically inherit when living together. The reality may surprise you.
- Taking legal advice early – Why it can save time, money, and stress – and why many people put it off unnecessarily.
- Google vs. solicitors – Sure, you can ask the internet anything (even ChatGPT!), but when it comes to your future, nothing replaces tailored professional advice.
Why attend?
Whether you’re running a business, planning for the future, or simply curious about your own circumstances, this is a chance to hear directly from two highly experienced legal professionals in a relaxed, accessible format. Demelza and Michelle will be busting myths, answering questions, and ensuring you leave better informed – and maybe even entertained.
So if you’ve ever wondered whether that thing your mate told you down the pub is actually true, this is your opportunity to find out.
Spaces are limited, so don’t miss out!
We look forward to welcoming you for an engaging morning of networking, learning, and community spirit.
7:30am arrival for an 8:00am breakfast which will finish at 9:30am.
